[Ebm] Hello darkness, my old [C#] friend
I've come to talk with you [Ebm] again
Because a vision soft [B] ly cree-ping [F#]
Left its seeds while I [B] was sleeping [F#]
And the [B] vision that was planted in my [F#] brain
Still re- [Ebm] mains within the [C#] sound of [Ebm] silence
In restless dreams I walked [C#] alone
Narrow streets of cobble [Ebm] stone
'Neath the halo of [B] a street lamp [F#]
I turned my collar to the [B] cold and damp [F#]
When my [B] eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon [F#] light
That split the [Ebm] night and touched the [C#] sound of [Ebm] silence
And in the naked light I [C#] saw
Ten thousand people, maybe [Ebm] more
People talking with- [B] out speaking [F#]
People hearing with- [B] out listening [F#]
People writing [B] songs that voices never [F#] share
And no one [Ebm] dared disturb the [C#] sound of [Ebm] silence
"Fools", said I, "You do not [C#] know
Silence like a cancer [Ebm] grows
Hear my words that I [B] might teach you [F#]
Take my arms that I [B] might reach you" [F#]
But my [B] words, like silent raindrops [F#] fell
And [Ebm] echoed in the [C#] wells of [Ebm] silence
And the people bowed and [C#] prayed
To the neon god they [Ebm] made
And the sign flashed out [B] its warning [F#]
In the words that it [B] was forming [F#]
And the sign said, "The [B] words of the prophets are written on the subway [F#] walls
And tenement [Ebm] halls" and whispered in the [C#] sounds of [Ebm] silence
I've come to talk with you [Ebm] again
